Who turned 7 years old today?
That gal! Michael and I have been so busy working on the bus that we could only spare a couple hours to celebrate Simone's birthday. We took her to the beach (finally) and she and her brother thoroughly enjoyed what is to be our last trip to a Florida beach.

Car Days II
In addition to working on the bus, Michael had to work on the white car just to get it running again!
Bus - Hack It!
This post could also be called, "Life - Hack It!"
Working on the bus and getting to know materials and tools has opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me! I used to think I couldn't do something if someone else had not already done it. Not so anymore! Michael is has an attitude of "Let's see if we can figure it out ourselves." That's the nice version of how he says it. Here's a recent example of how we got around the limitations set before us.
Goal: Gray or silver, hard-wired downlights to put under our cabinets in the main living space of the bus.
Problem: You can get silver lights at a reasonable price, but they are battery-operated. Or you can get hard-wired lights, but they are white or black. Silver was too expensive and we needed 17.
Solution: Buy the white lights because their casing is removable. Buy a metallic silver spraypaint that will bond with plastic ("Rustoleum 2x" for sure does, but I'm not sure about Valspar and others). Take off the casings and spray!
This "can-do" attitude has seeped into other parts of my life. This past weekend, I was in the frozen food aisle when a foreigner from Asia approached me and asked, "Which of these pizzas does not have pork?" I helped him search for one but could not find one. I told him that the Margherita pizza has no pork but it has not meat. He looked forlorn, "Oh, but I want meat!" His other criteria was that it be personal size so it could fit in a microwave. Then I was struck with a hack-it idea! "Why don't you get this meatless pizza and add chicken! Do you want me to show you where the chicken is?" He didn't want to leave the aisle to look for chicken and said, "No." I held up my hands and said, "Well, I can't help you then."
But I left pretty stoked that if I had had that problem, I could make it happen! Life is hackable!

Max - Military Cut
We have been so busy with the bus that Michael hasn't had time to cut Max's hair when he's finished working at night. We decided to test out the military barbers!
He liked it! But maybe for the post-buzz treat ...

Simone's Pre-Bday Party
I remember the joy I had when my mom came to my classroom to celebrate my 7th birthday and I want to provide that same joy to the kids when I can. For Simone's birthday this year, we had to celebrate 2 days in advance because of the school year's ending before her actual birthdate. Michael came along to help, too!
The kids were so excited! They would have bum-rushed the cupcakes if we weren't standing by to shoo them away.
The kids were begging for another cupcake, but I could already feel their energy about to explode in the classroom so I declined and we happily gobbled up the leftovers at home.

Simone was of course quite shy, but deep down I'm sure she was elated to have all this attention on her.
Ms. Whitley was so helpful in taking (and participating) in pictures!

Simone's pre-bday celebration at school
We visited Simone today and brought cupcakes for her pre-day celebration at school. Her real birthday is this Sunday.

Bus - Progress in April
We have 4 weeks left to finish the bus and we have been working like madmen! Hence the long hiatus from posting. Here is some of our progress:
The Galley
The Sofa base
The Kids' Bunk Beds
Ok, no time to write more. I just wanted to give some images to show family and friends what we're up to. We've progressed even farther than this, but I didn't have time to upload them from my phone / camera!
